Excellence is also required in surgery and imaging, with 3D digital radiology, functional nuclear magnetic resonance and the latest generation PET scans and even microsurgery robots.
Therapeutic results and patient safety are among the highest in the world, nosocomial infections and medical accidents among the lowest.
With six major universities of global reputation — a very high number for a small country — medical research and discoveries can develop on particularly favorable ground. A large number of foreign students come to perfect their training during Erasmus and Mundus programs.
Indeed, the country has an impressive number of international professors, Nobel Prize winners and users of cutting-edge techniques. The private sector has understood this well, as shown by the establishment of numerous pharmaceutical industries (Pfizer, GSK or Baxter for example), with the highest concentration of clinical studies but also of employees in scientific fields per inhabitant.
The future also meets the present with the many biotechnology companies and start-ups interested in gene therapies and stem cells. In focus: new treatments for difficult-to-treat diseases, cancers and the fight against aging.
Belgium is definitely a country where it is good to seek treatment.
